Labour Day Weekend
A bit of a delayed post since this week the handsome-and-talented husband and I were both working away from Milano.
Tuesday, May 1st was Labour Day so we ran away to Riomaggiore for a 4-day adventure on coastal fishing villages. We didn't do much. It was a weekend of waking up late, having coffee, orange juice and croissants on our large sunny terrace that looks down on Riomaggiore's main square, then going down the smooth pebble beach for sunbathing and swimming in the sea for the entire day, before heading home and dressing for dinner, either taken in our balcony again or at the quiet trattoria by the train station.
How wonderful it is to swim in the sea! I'd forgotten how nice it is to plunge into cool blue waters, how the salt crusts on hair and how afterwards our skin would smell of salt mixed with sun lotion. For three days, we parked ourselves on large smooth boulders on the waterside, so we could lie with our feet in the water and watch crabs mating.
On Tuesday, our last day, the sea was the clearest it had ever been. I could see straight down to the rocky sea floor, and see the fish swim in between my feet. By this time, Robert had turned a lovely shade of brown, his eyebrows slowly turning blond. He's all shiny and smooth, swimming between the boulders, like an oversized otter, and he struggles to climb on the jutting rocks only to dive into the cool waters again.
Unfortunately this week it was back to rainy, gray weather in northern Italy. Robert was in Germany for work and I was in Torino working for three days until Friday. It rained almost non-stop and this depresses me; after a lovely weekend full of sun and love, it was hard to be away from Robert and having awful weather.

sementes
I found this on Flickr whilst looking for papaya images. See sometimes, when I'm hit with a certain memory, I have to quickly get a visual reference and savour the emotion. In this particular case, I was IMing with a friend in Indonesia, talking about fruit and I remember the breakfasts my father would make for me.
My father would slice papayas into blocks in a bowl. Sprinkle a little bit of sugar and squeeze fresh lime over it. Sometimes he does this before I even wake up, so he chills it in the fridge. Sometimes the bowl of papaya is already waiting for me on the dining table, but nothing really beats this feeling of opening the fridge and discovering there is this delicious bowl of papaya specially made by my father for me.
Oh man, I'm really homesick right now.

under the tuscan sun
edit, 060727: I'm back in Milano but only for a night, as tomorrow we are catching a 9 am flight to Amsterdam, where Robert and I will be chilling out with our friends for a week... Ciao ciao...
Wow, what a week! I'm loving it here... meeting interesting people, eating yummy food, waking up to the amazing view out of my bedroom window, even the heat is not as intense as Milano, we get cool breezes at night. We slept with the windows open and one night ended up with a bat flapping round our livingroom, poor thing...
The presentation went well, I thought. We always have to present last so on Monday I felt anxious all day, but once I slip into the presentation mode, I just get comfortable. Feedback was positive so we're happy.
Last night we went to Siena, to Piazza del Campo, where we had a refreshing apperitivo *make mine a mojito* and watched people. Dinner was absolutely amazing! I had a Tuscan specialty pasta: pici, which is like spaghetti but thick. Pici all'anatra for starters. Then I had veal with chestnuts.... Ooooohhhhh heavenly veal with chesnuts... No picture would do justice... The veal was perfect, rare and coated in a super-duper-delizioso (chestnut?) sauce, with pieces of tender chestnuts.... omg, to die for...
More news when I get back to Milano. Right now, I need to prepare for this afternoon's presentation :)

sunday at the lake
Robert, Joris and I woke up early on Sunday *surprise, surprise* and spent a lazy day on the shores of Lake Como. We took a train from Milano Cadorna to Como Nord Lago, then a fast wingboat to Menaggio.
We spread our towels, slathered sun lotion, and swam in the lake. Or rather, the boys sawm and I bobbed in the water. The water surface was warm, the water colder as I dived to the bottom. I like swimming in the lake; it's not salty like the sea and no salt crusts in my hair afterwards. I miss swimming. I should swim in Milano.
Afterwards we ate gelato and went for a nice stroll in Menaggio, looking at all the beachfront properties. Then, we explored Como's walking streets. Shops were having massive sales but we sat in a bar and had a drink before dinner.
We're awfully lethargic after our afternoon in the sun. And poor Robert is terribly sunburned too... oh dear... I gave him temporary treatment in the form of calamine lotion and an ibuprofen, but tomorrow I must get some kind of aloe vera lotion or so from the pharmacy.
You can also view photos on Joris' Flickr page.

Heliuphant: Urban Street Game
Last week, we were running around town, participating in Alejandro's experience prototype, as he calls it. I was in a team with Aram, who, by the way, has posted all these dodgy photos of me during the game on his Flickr.
* All images originally uploaded by blese.
The ransom note.
1st task: draw a chalk graffiti on the pavement
2nd task: hugging a stranger over 50 in the street
3rd task: spheres and circles
We got stuck on 3...
The people we asked didn't know the right answer, either...

And still got the wrong answer...

Putting clues together with the other groups...

ewwww
ok, so a few days ago, we'd noticed a strange smell in the bedroom and we couldn't quite figure out what it was. robert is always tidy and cleans all the time, so we were quite puzzled as to what it could be. nevertheless, we frantically cleaned and tidied up some more in the hope of eliminating the odd smell. *gue sampe bakar-bakar incense segala, dan selalu buka jendela walopun diluar dingin banget*
then, robert noticed the stack of wedding presents lying next to the TV in the bedroom. we'd unwrapped all the presents the day after the wedding but because our flat had been the central meeting place, and sleeping place for out-of-town visitors, and was in such a mess, we wrapped everything up again and placed them in a neat stack in the bedroom, to be unwrapped and used another day.
one of the gifts was a beautiful bowl from laszlo and lesh. only now did we remember that when laszlo and lesh gave us this present, they had put two bananas in the box with the bowl! ewww... so that's what the strange smell was!
soooooooo disgusting, ewww, ewww.
but don't you think the bowl is beautiful? and so blue?

daily dose of fruit
Ever since Robert bought me a blender last May, it's been so easy to get our daily dose of fruit. I make a fruit smoothie most mornings, or as a healthy drink before dinner. Since it's been summer, we've had an abundance of summer fruits like strawberries, frambozen/raspberries, blackberries and I've been making lots of berry smoothies.
My personal favorite is a strawberry yoghurt shake: 500 grams of fresh strawberries, 1 cup vanilla yoghurt, 1 cup very cold milk, 1 tablespoon aloe vera. I get pure aloe vera extract from the health shop and it's good for your digestion and immune system.
Another favorite of mine is the mango-mint-and-aloe-vera smoothie: 1 mango, 1 handful of fresh mint leaves, 1/2 cup of yoghurt, 1/2 cup of milk, 1 tablespoon aloe vera. Yumm yumm! :)
Mangoes can get expensive if you buy them at the Albert Heijn or supermarkets, but I buy mine from the Tuesday market in the centrum, where I can get fresh mangoes and avocadoes, for 80p or €1 each. Sometimes I also get tinned mangoes from the Chinese toko and add the sweet syrup into the blender with all the other ingredients.
The Tuesday market in town is the best place to get fresh fruits. Satsumas, mandarins, avocadoes, summer berries, cherries, etc. I know I must sound really domesticated but hooray for fresh fruit smoothies! :-)

twenty-four-and-a-half
this is laszlo's light in his livingroom, isn't cool? we went over to his place sunday night to see his holiday pictures, and eat a lot of moroccan take-away food from bazar. he and lesh went to morocco for a couple of weeks.
morocco through laszlo's eyes is just gorgeous. laszlo just bought a D70 camera and i think he is still learning to get to grips with it. his photos of marakesh and essaouira reminds me of tunisia, actually. i need to scan in my negatives from my tunisia trip and show them to robert. i'd love to return to tunisia with robert.
anyway.
so today i find out that i still have 24.5 holiday days left. omg. omfg. that's a lot of days. that's practically 5 weeks off! and i have no idea where the half day comes from, but it's really weird, maybe it's because i changed my working hours back to full-time, plus i had the sabbatical leave this year.
i had to recheck twice to make sure i got the right amount of days, and it's really true! so now i have to see what i'm going to do with my days off. :)
robert only has 10 days left this year though; he had 1 month in indo last march and 1 week in august for the dutch wedding. so we were thinking we could have a short one-week break at end of october and another in december, getting out from work early for the christmas holidays.
i'm really happy. can't wait to get away with robert for a little while. he's been so busy and working so hard lately; it would just be nice to travel together someplace. any suggestions?

norwegian cheese
gudbrandsdalsost. norwegian brown goat's cheese. so so good. it's mild, tangy, sweet and buttery, and just melts in your mouth. it's like caramel.
the first time i had it was in 1997. i was in manhattan visiting my norwegian relatives and this was served after dinner. so yumm!
the last few months i've been working with cathrine, who is norwegian, and last weekend she went to the norwegian shop in rotterdam and bought me some lovely lovely norwegian cheese! how nice is that?
she also only recently found out about the norwegian shop, and i'm quite curious to see it. based on her description, it sounded like a norwegian log cabin (inside a former church), in the middle of rotterdam. intriguing... well, i'm in rotterdam tomorrow so if they are open, i'll have a look.

sushi wushi night with robert
robert needed to get some more content for his TV concept at work so we went to the sushi place in kleine berg in the hopes of getting some footage.
we're regulars at the sushi place, and the proprietor let us film them make the sushi, so we got some cool shots. :)
we ordered a california temaki roll (hand-roll sushi with avocado, tuna, mayo), oshinko maki, futomaki, and a mini sushi-combo for robert, comprising of sake+tuna+crab nigiri and kappa maki.
after that, we ate some beef teriyaki, fried rice and a bowl of ramen with thinly sliced beef. for dessert we had green tea ice cream. :)
happy happy, belly full of lovely food. toothache all forgotten, hehe.

missing my mom + dad
robert and i went to meet my parents at schiphol airport friday night. they were flying back to indo from their vacation in portugal and were on a transit for a couple of hours at schiphol. traffic was terrible and i was freaking out that i wouldn't see my mom and dad. we made it in time, though, and went for a coffee together.
*sigh* i miss my mom and dad. and my sister. and little xavie. :(

my dad fell in love with the new mac mini when we visited the apple shop last week in eindhoven. so we bought one for him and gave it to him at the airport. he was really pleased.
i spoke to my sister this morning and she had picked up my parents at the airport and that they were all home safe and sound and were all unwrapping the presents we bought them. i bought xavie a miffy tent and he didn't quite get the concept of a tent. so he stood inside the tent, and ran around the garden with the tent over him; like a giant house-shaped snail.
*kebayang ngga sih, ada tenda miffy jalan-jalan sendiri di halaman rumah, with two little bare feet sticking out the bottom... kocakkk, seperti keonggg, huahahaha*

what's in my bag: july 2005
posted this for the what's in your bag group at flickr.
i didn't realise how much junk i've been carrying around in my bag every day! a pocket penguin paperback, a moleskine sketchbook, a couple of pens, work ID, wallet, keys, lipbalm, tissue, a couple of picture books, peppermints; all things i need daily. but concert ticket stubs? and a spork? i guess it comes in handy if i suddenly have to eat pasta or instant noodles or salad at work something.
oh and my Canon G5 camera is usually in there too, except i'm using it to take this photo :)
you can see the bag here.

on a lighter note...
penguin books turns 70... happy birthday!

in celebration of their 70th anniversary, they've published 70 penguin pocket books. you can buy them online here; the idea is that you can buy 70 titles for a boxset price of 70 quid. the spines of these 70th anniversary paperbacks are color-coded; originally, in 1935, it was orange for fiction, blue for biography, green for crime. they are also numbered on the spine.
i was at my local bookshop last week with kathya and david when i spotted the penguin books special. they were sold separately, and kathya and i bought some titles, different ones, so we can do a book swap later.
the titles i got:
3. otherwise pandemonium - nick hornby
4. summer in algiers - albert camus
43. something for the weekend - jamie oliver
50. seventeen poisoned englishmen - gabriel garcia marquez
69. murder - john steinbeck
70. on seeing and noticing - alain de botton
the other thing that made me happy today was that my order from hardtroze has arrived. yay! new bag! it's cream with a flowery pattern on the front, and wide straps for slinging over my shoulder. the size is perfect to carrying my powerbook, my camera, my mobile, my lipgloss, my facial oil blotting paper, water bottle, wallet, keys, mints, all those things girls carry round basically. hooray :)

wedding pictures
gerard took this photo of the back of my head. the bun was adorned with jasmine flowers which smelled so so good, and i had to change flowers several times so they would always be fresh. i also had a long sash made of jasmine flowers which was attached to the side of my head. the other stuff that was heavy were the sticks of silver stuck to the bun, omg, they were painful as they started to sag at the end of the reception.
my unmarried girlfriends kept stealing the flowers from my hair as they believe it would make them get married faster if they could get flowers from the bride's head. we shall wait and see.

by Mr Robert, guest blogger
Last weekend was the annual visit to the Nort Sea Jazz festival in The Hague. Unfortunately without my beloved lady, miss Yasmina. This picture was taken with my camera, so you can tell I got the right spot (being tall also helps). This man has to be around his 70's, but he moves like he's around his 40's. They must be putting him on an oxygen supply after the concert.
Conclusion: he's still got it (whatever 'it' is), he's got sexy dancers, a great band, a funky groove, JB is a brand... He is James Brown.

my dad at undiscovered territory
this photo was taken by mas djaka dwiandi of my dad during the undiscovered territory event over the weekend in jakarta.
i'm pleasantly surprised that my dad came along and had a look round and a chat with mas godot. at least now he realises that my friends are actual living, breathing entities that have daytime jobs, hobbies, even families and kids. yes dad, i got over my imaginary friends at the age of six.
