it's done!

So last night we had an informal graduation ceremony, and the final exhibition. It was packed and soon I was tired of talking about my project; I should have prototyped a repeat button with a voice recording on it. Oh, it felt, somewhat anti-climactic.

My Arduino blew up at 3 am that morning (after I thought everything was done), and without my knowledge, Robert had taken the spare Arduino to his office in Monza. So in a panic I had to email Massimo and Giovanni, asking whether they had a spare Arduino lying around at the studio.

Luckily, everything turned out OK. Here's some photos... taken by Hector and Mika...

15December.jpg

We skipped out of the exhibition early. Giovanni, Robert and I went to Rosso Pomodoro to celebrate with Napoli-style pizzas and beers. It was delicious! I'm glad Giovanni was there to celebrate with us. Afterwards, we were supposed to party with the rest of the graduating class at Trattoria Toscana but dinner didn't finish until half past midnight and we were knackered so we went home. :-)

Yay me! It's over! It's been an amazing year, learning so much, meeting creative people... I'm sad because everyone is leaving and thinking about life in Milan without them is painfully unbearable...

Another chapter begins, I guess... :-)

Back from Ars Electronica 2006

Wow. What a week! I had a fantastic time. So good to get away from Milan, disconnect and immerse myself in symposiums/lectures and interactive exhibits and music parties...

This week I have:

* taken over 1Gb worth of pictures and video
* met a lot of interesting new people
* ran into an old friend by accident
* gotten to know some of my classmates better
* walked in my bare feet in the grass
* fallen asleep twice on the grass; once on the sunny banks of the Danube, and another in an Austrian countryside monastery
* browned in the sun
* attended an Arduino workshop and sat next to an overenthusiastic American, who turned out to be Golan Levin
* bought the new Arduino board
* gotten the Arduino board to work
* been told by John Maeda that he liked my work and ideas on 'simplicity'
* got a signed copy of his latest book
* read half of that book
* been completely star-struck after meeting Golan Levin and John Maeda
* sent my husband photos of myself through an internet phone booth
* drank a lot of Austrian white beer
* drank a lot of bad coffee
* eaten a lot of sinfully yummy Austrian cakes and pastries
* eaten a lot of healthy vegetarian, bio meals
* not gotten into bed at a reasonable time due to self-inflicted party-abuse
* not gotten out of bed at a reasonable time due to self-inflicted party-abuse
* worn a Threadless t-shirt every day of the week (not the same one)
* only seen 2 other people wearing Threadless t-shirts at the festival
* thrown some LED throwies at a passing tram
* painted with light with friends at Hauptplatz
* burned my eyeballs at the Ars Electronica Animation Festival
* attended some pretty amazing (digital) music performances
* played with some really cool tangible and embedded interfaces
* seen more interactive art exhibits than you could shake a stick at...
* been to a wine festival

I'm still editing the videos, and also trying to catch up on the Siena Design Project report which needs to be handed in before the new semester starts next week, plus some client work so now I am back to work mode in Milan. Busy bee but happy to be together again with my lovely husband :)

Ars Electronica 2006

Cool, the Ars Electronica 2006 festival program is up. Annoyingly too late to signup for the Arduino workshops. On the other hand, the Arduino workshop is an intense five-day ten-a.m-to-seven-p.m activity and it seems a shame to miss out on the other bits of the festival.

The events that look quite promising are down below...

Conferences:
- The Simplicity Symposiums Part I (a.m) & Part II (p.m.)
- Goblin City
- Redefining Public Service: What is Public Value and What do Community Media have to do with It?

Hauptplatz/Mobile City
- As If We Were Alone...
- Mobile Assassins
- Regrets

Also, the play The Electric Grandmother by Franz Schwabeneder, based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, sounds good. Would love to catch that while I'm there...

School will only be paying for 2 days' accommodation in Linz, and I know I want to stay until Sunday, so I am now looking for 3 days' accommodation, possibly sharing with Huie. Need to find train or air fares as well. I like the idea of travelling by train and looking out the window. Wonder if the prices are sky-high though, and what kind of student discounts they'll have.

Also published on my vox.com.

under the tuscan sun

edit, 060727: I'm back in Milano but only for a night, as tomorrow we are catching a 9 am flight to Amsterdam, where Robert and I will be chilling out with our friends for a week... Ciao ciao...

Wow, what a week! I'm loving it here... meeting interesting people, eating yummy food, waking up to the amazing view out of my bedroom window, even the heat is not as intense as Milano, we get cool breezes at night. We slept with the windows open and one night ended up with a bat flapping round our livingroom, poor thing...

The presentation went well, I thought. We always have to present last so on Monday I felt anxious all day, but once I slip into the presentation mode, I just get comfortable. Feedback was positive so we're happy.

Last night we went to Siena, to Piazza del Campo, where we had a refreshing apperitivo *make mine a mojito* and watched people. Dinner was absolutely amazing! I had a Tuscan specialty pasta: pici, which is like spaghetti but thick. Pici all'anatra for starters. Then I had veal with chestnuts.... Ooooohhhhh heavenly veal with chesnuts... No picture would do justice... The veal was perfect, rare and coated in a super-duper-delizioso (chestnut?) sauce, with pieces of tender chestnuts.... omg, to die for...

More news when I get back to Milano. Right now, I need to prepare for this afternoon's presentation :)

Heliuphant: Urban Street Game

Last week, we were running around town, participating in Alejandro's experience prototype, as he calls it. I was in a team with Aram, who, by the way, has posted all these dodgy photos of me during the game on his Flickr.

* All images originally uploaded by blese.

The ransom note.

1st task: draw a chalk graffiti on the pavement

2nd task: hugging a stranger over 50 in the street

3rd task: spheres and circles

We got stuck on 3...

The people we asked didn't know the right answer, either...

So, we Google'd it...

And still got the wrong answer...

Putting clues together with the other groups...

more friday fun

Workshop: Keyboard Hack Workshop: Keyboard Hack Workshop: Keyboard Hack Workshop: Keyboard Hack

Me presenting the 1-day Assignment

This week was superfun! I'm still trying to get my head round Eyesweb, omg... why does it take 3 functions (or boxes, whatever you call them) to make a keypress? It's kind of doing my head in.

For our 1-day assignment, I made this little Flash animation of leaf clusters... Two toy guns (for blowing air bubbles) was rigged to the USB keyboard connected to my iBook. The tilt switches on the guns would activate the motor, and as you point the guns to the screen, the air from the guns will scatter the leaves across the screen.

When you switch the guns off, the leaves will regroup again...

Okay, so it's not exactly rocket science but I'm so proud of me.

friday fun

bubble gun kinjal demonstrates: opening the lid kinjal demonstrates: burst of bubbles review with adam and massimo

On Friday, I was working together in a group with Rit and Kinjal.

Originally, we wanted to fit the bubble gun on the umbrella so that the air nozzle faced upwards, and the motor is switched on when the umbrella is opened. We experimented with putting colored paint and ink in the dishwash liquid mixture to make colored bubbles.

I thought it would be neat to spray a burst of colored bubbles on the ceiling, to make crazy bubble splatters when the bubbles popped against the ceiling surface. Like making frescoes. The umbrella would protect you from the paint splatters.

Unfortunately that little experiment didn't really happen. The bubbles refused to burst forth. Maybe the paint made them heavy. The soapsuds just gathered near the nozzle and the air wasn't transforming them into bubbles.

Quick switch to Plan B: We rigged a tilt sensor to the bubble gun so when the nozzle is parallel to the ground, the motor would be on, and when the nozzle is pointing to the ground, the motor is off. We pasted the modified gun to a lid of a cardboard box, and we placed the bowl with the soap + ink mixture.

So the gun becomes a burglar alarm system. Whoever opens the box will have a stream of black-ink bubbles blown at them. :)

The others in class also came up with really cool ideas. I liked Pushkar's touch-sensitive fibre-optic LEDs. Hector, Ana and Karthik made a "Send a Kiss" object using remote control car engine triggered by sound sensors.

football blur

Since there was a strike on public transport, Joe, Ana, Lili and I went for apperitivo at Exploit. Joris also came to join us. Then we sat around the square of the Basilica, drinking Coronas with lemons and watching people play football.

Later and later we ended up in a wine bar in Naviglio, where we ran into Eliza, Andrea and Raquelle. We hang out a while before going home. Because we started drinking so early, it felt much later than 00.30 when we finally left.

Anyway, I am looking forward to more tinkering with toys and stuff next week! :D

innards: dissecting toys

innards: penguin walkie-talkie innards: miaowing cat with speakers, touch sensor innards: annoying miaowing cat innards: torch/flashlight

The miaowing cats were really freaky, with these crazy LED eyes that glowed when you touched them. They were even more freaky after we'd ripped the plastic fur off them. Everyone kept calling the optocouplers octopussy today.

I unpacked my stuff and found my toolbox from my Ravensbourne days. I even found my old student ID card, a soldering iron, unused super8 cartridges, loads of photography folders and precious old sketchbooks. Little forgotten treasures.

Next week in Hangar Bicocca, MixedMedia event, May 25-28th. Looking forward to that.

Oh, and the latest installment of the Adicolor video series is out, Black, and I have been filling up my iPod with all the Adicolor series.

exiled

Well. Things have gotten way too complicated. Long story short: I have to go to Indo to get a new Italian visa. It's just faster that way. Plus, somehow I am a prisoner in the Netherlands as I cannot get another sticker on my passport that allows me to travel.

Not completely happy about going to Indo because this means being away from Italy for around three weeks. I feel terrible towards my group mates Huie and Dona, since we have to work remotely and I won't be there to help them present our project.

It's also super shitty for Robert because last week he was super happy with the idea of us finally moving to Italy and living together again.

More updates later.

soal menjadi interaction designer

Nah loh... Gue masih pengen jadi interaction designer ato ngga yah?

Kemaren, setelah curhat kepada Mr.S di Seattle dan Mr.H di Miami, gue ngerasa better about myself *why are my friends living so far away?!* tapi kok yah gue masih ada sinking feeling? Kaya'nya, sejak gue mulai kuliah lagi, bukannya gue menambah ilmu, tapi gue ngerasa jadi semakin nyasar! Hahaha... nah loh...

Bukannya bilang "Congrats" kek, ato apa, mereka malah nanya, "Kenapa?!?!" Aneh ya mentalitynya. What's wrong with studying?

Hahaha... Gue jadi mikir nih, apa gue masih terus pengen jadi interaction designer, karena gue mulai sebelll sama kata-kata interaction design, hahaha...

Anyway. Hari ini gue bakalan jadi ibu rumah tangga. Nanti malam temen-temen pada mau datang untuk cooking and dining together. Eeek! I have to clean the house!

vomit

ugh. that time of the project again. presentation time. eek!

huie and ana decided i am going to be the group narrator in tomorrow's presentation. oh, joy.

on the way home, robert laughed at me *in a sympathetic husbandly kind of way* about it because he knows i always get nervous before presentations, and he knows i am going to be fine. i know i'll probably be ok, but i feel vomity nonetheless. i have yet to actually vomit on anyone though, so i guess the faculty is safe. unless the word "value" comes up again too many times tomorrow.

oh, we ran out of water at home *husband not so domesticated, as i thought* so now we are drinking beer.

edit, friday lunchtime: ok, we had the presentation and it went allright. i actually said the words "value" a few times during the presentation. eek! i was upset that liliana was not in the audience because she always grounds me in presentations; when our eyes lock and i relax as everyone disappears and i feel as if i'm only talking to her. i MUST learn how to find more anchors in the audience.

first investigations: done! :)

well, today we had our final reviews and presentations of the first Investigations design projects, themed "Energy". *it's confusing these different namings of projects since in the booklet they've taken on the names of Ivrea programs, but in reality it's a very Domus curriculum*

for the last four weeks, i've been working on this project together with liliana and raul. our project is called iFlow and soon i will put up the flash project presentation on my portfolio site *i'm procrastinating here, i keep saying i'm going to update my portfolio site and i never do*

our presentation went well; spontaneity and ad-lib is key. i was dismayed to find out that our group had to present last. i much prefer to present first or second, out of the six groups we had in interaction design.

yesterday, we printed up tshirts with the iFlow project logo on across the front and we wore that to the presentation today. everyone had a laugh over that.

here is the project abstract if you're interested...

iFlow concept abstract:
Play and free-movement in a designed urban playground as a physical activity to energise commuters.

Our project proposes a series of designed "zones" in which users can participate in free-movement to energise themselves, either as a personal exercise or a networked social activity.

The activity uses urban architecture, furniture and signage to achieve this goal.

It encourages:
- [re-]discovering of new areas within the city
- interaction with others of same interest
- exercise + fitness
- creativity + fun

next week we will start the Applied Dreams projects, which is a two-week innovation workshop, working with live briefs from clients.

i had to pick between "play" and "identity" and i picked the latter since i felt there was too much play and games in my projects and i would like to branch out more, and "identity" appealed to me in terms of identity, micro-economics and socio-cultural aspects of interaction design.

it will be an intense two-weeks.

have a good weekend, everyone!

february friday

yesterday was overall a good day. francesco morace lecture in the morning, whose topic is completely in line with our project concept direction so raul, lili and i were the ones with perky attentive ears and mind. i have to say that i look forward most to ezio manzini + francesco morace's lectures the most. they're most coherent of all the lectures.

then it was apperitivo with the ivrea people. it was pretty cool. i met steven who actually works with karen in berlin, and had a nice conversation with him. i had a nosy poke at their bookshelves and i think i will be popping there for library visits :)

after apperitivo, ana and i went to lili's. carlos is over for the weekend and he had prepared a lovely dinner. marcela, who is colombian, and her italian boyfriend, maurizio, came over shortly with a neapolitan chocolate-and-almond cake (superyummm).

afterwards, ana and i raced for the last metro home, and the others went salsa-dancing at havana.

when i got home, eva's friends had just left, and she was cleaning up after the party. i was sorry that i missed the party, but perhaps she'll invite more people next week or so. we had a short chat before i went to bed.

now i have a bit of a headache. must have been the alcohol from last night. i'm going to do some boring errands then i am meeting eva for coffee somewhere in town. want to go to la feltrinelli to pick up some dvds and it's always a nice place to sit a while and read books. :)

tomorrow, lili, carlos and raul are coming over for brunch and a bit of group work.

bored... [updated]

DA-IDII Interaction Design 2006

to see the Flickr notes, click here

edit:
another lecturer, late again... i can understand that sometimes things don't work out as planned, and people end up running late, or not turn up at all (!). what gets to me is the way one tutor would take the microphone and apologise, saying, "well, students, you must understand... mr so-and-so is a really important and famous designer/architect/person, so he has a busy schedule..."

as if you need to be important and famous to have a busy schedule.

what pissed me off once was the fact that a certain guest lecturer notified the college at 6 p.m the previous day to say he could not make it. the DA staff didn't notify the students that class had been cancelled either via email or phone, but they just waited until everyone turned up the next day and were sitting in the lecture hall to announce the cancellation.

hell, if i'd known that, i would have taken my pbook + camera around milan to do some user research.

*griping session over*

energy -- or lack of it?

well. we're doing our first project and i am in a team with liliana and raul. the theme is energy, which we really like. so far we're working really well together, we come from diverse backgrounds and work in different ways but the discussions are really fluid and we really get each other. energy runs high in our group :)

on the other hand, the weekend before last, my trip to netherlands was cancelled due to bergamo being closed down after heavy snowfall. not seeing dearly-missed husband puts one in a bad mood, hence low energy level. :(

friday night at mine

friday @ mine friday @ mine friday @ mine nessino light from artemide

robert is in milan for the weekend, and we're really ecstatic to see each other. mr and mrs k together again, at least for a couple of days...

friday night, i invited a bunch of people over to my place for a spot of dinner, drinks and socialising. it's just that last week we ended up going out for drinks and this time, i thought it would be nice to stay in and socialise instead. plus, i wanted robert to meet everybody.

turned my bedroom into a "chill-out" lounge, putting cushions on the floor for people to sit on, as well as the double-bed, the coffee table laden with snacks and candles, and with the help of the nice warm glow emitted by the orange nessino table lamp from artemide, which was left in the apartment by dario and barbara :)

music was streamed from my iPod, as well as our home radio station in eindhoven, which robert set up the night before, so now i can make my own playlist from the music i have in our dutch apartment, yippeee :)

together with eva, i cooked a sausage stew with potatoes, and carrots in a creamy red-wine-and-tomato-sauce, saffron risotto, egg tagliatelle with pesto, buttered spinach, a huge salad, and trays of hors d'oeuvres with cheeses, coldcuts and seafood. everyone came over with beer and wine and a chocolate cake and we had a feast!

so the first dinner party (of many more to come) was a success! :)

tomorrow we are planning a day out to como, which hector is organising. we're catching the 08.20 train from garibaldi, omg, what an ungodly hour for a sunday. i hope we wake up in time.

January 17, 2006

awesome day!

i had an awesome day today. firstly, my class didn't start until noon, heheh, which meant i got to stay in bed till ten. lazy sleepyhead, i know. i met up with joe at romolo train station and we walked over to the off-campus place where the first lecture was taking place.

the lecture was by marina abramovich, and she really had me captivated throughout her talk. she is just so fascinating, speaking about performance art, the time-based performance, about the charismatic meta-physical space that the performance artist creates around themselves during a performance or installation, and all the theories about present, past and future times. totally inspiring.

then, joe and i somehow separated ourselves from the rest of the group while getting back to school, and when we were at porta genova waiting for our bus, i spotted the usual vegetable-and-fruit truck and spotted the weirdest cauliflowers ever. or at least i thought they were cauliflowers. i guess they are a broccoli-cauliflower hybrid.

anyway, they looked cool, and really beautiful in a nature-made-fractal-art way so i bought one, and a kilo of clementines. i still need to figure out how to cook the alien vegetable but we ate the clementines during the afternoon class; i've made it a mission to keep myself and my classmates healthy, eating nutritious food, during this year. :)

the afternoon class was conducted by massimo banzi. physical interaction design and the craft of interactive prototyping. omg, this guy is amazing! this is one guy who completely understands what i want to do and achieve in this MA course.

my entire class was also really excited and we just crowded around massimo after the lecture, asking questions and i showed him some of my work on my iPod. everyone was on a high. even some other guy from the other MA course, something like architecture or other, wants to transfer to our class. yeah, interaction design rocks!!! :)

oh, and both lectures today were done in english instead of italian.

when i got home, eva was in bed, sick. so i made her a cup of tea. she doesn't want to eat anything and i hope she'll eat something soon, otherwise she won't get better. :(

talked to gerard on skype for a while. i miss him. skype was acting up so i couldn't hear him no matter how many times we restarted. so in the end, i talked, and he typed, hahah. weird interaction. i'd ask him something and on my screen, the pen icon would appear to show that he's replying to my question.

anyway, that was the story of my day :)

p.s. the delightful mr k seems to be going a little crazy at home without me. see photos below...

January 12, 2006

first day of school

only in milan can you pick up a cute guy before your first class of the day.

i took the metro to porta genova. at san agostino the metro stopped and the PA came on. all i heard were the words "ultimo" and "fermata". oops. for some odd reason i could not discern, this train was not going further than san agostino, which was one stop shy of porta genova.

so i leg it out the door and out of the station. once overground, i didn't know which direction to take and i was too vain to take out my map from my bag. who wants to look like a lost tourist at that hour of the morning, right?

i stopped the next person out of the metro station: a guy in a neat gray coat. he looked friendly, and educated, and perhaps he spoke english? si, bene, he replied, when i asked. he offered to walk me to porta genova station since his office was in that direction anyway.

it was a short brisk walk and i often find that in the company of strangers, one tends to disclose certain informations. he was a really nice guy, really easy to talk to. when we got to porta genova, i was almost sad and i was thinking of a subtle-and-not-so-sleazy way to keep in touch with him, and he suddenly said, "oh i have to give you my business card, so we can keep in touch, and we'll go for apperitivo or something, that'll be fun."

what a cool way to start the day. flattering, in any case. his name is antonio, he works for deloitte, and he lives a couple of blocks away from me, and we ride the green line together to work/school. how funny is that?! so we said goodbye and i promised i'd mail him to arrange apperitivo :)

my bus arrived as soon as i got to the porta genova, and while i was on the bus, i saw this guy who looked really familiar. we looked at each other, and i said "rit?" at the same time that he said, "yasmina?"

and omfg, it was rit!!!

rit and i somehow found each other through the internet before starting our course, so we'd been writing each other prior to arriving in italy. it was funny to recognise someone from their internet profile though. i mean, i'm getting good at that because i do meet online friends offline, but yeah, all the other meetings have been pre-meditated and this time it was pure coincidence.

first day went ok. it was mostly speech and introduction. i listened to the talks in half italian and half english, by only using my iPod earphones and only using one earphone. i just really like the way italian is spoken.

there's 18 people in my class; 3 of which are italians and the rest were foreigners from asia, south america and europe, and all of different backgrounds/disciplines. i like this diversity in knowledge and experience. i tried to talk to most of my classmates today, in an effort to get to know them better.

oh and there was a paranoia moment as well. i was a bit taken aback when i was standing in line to pick up my locker keys, and someone said, "oh, you're yasmina."

wtf? what does that mean?

and they said, "oh nothing, we've been talking about you" and muttered something along the lines of a blog. uh oh. does everyone read my blog?

in any case, i'm a blank slate this year. i'm open to anything although i do have certain *personal* goals to achieve on my course. i'm just really looking forward to working with this group of energetic, interesting people.

anyway. in the evening i went for drinks with liliana. i took her to this wine bar i like in corso di porta ticinese. we sat and drank and drew in our sketchbooks until it was closing time. and then, the guys who run the place came over to our table and said something along the lines of, "what are you girls talking about that is so interesting?"

see, if it was the netherlands, they'd say, "can you carry the conversation somewhere else? we're closing the bar."

so instead of leaving, we just sat and talked some more with enrico and alfonso. and i discovered that liliana is a real F1 geek, omg. it was like a scene out of a gabriel garcia marquez book. magic. we each were magicians capable of making magic happen. i love that. i love situations that make me a magician. :)

anyway it's late. it's almost two and i got an early class at 09.30 tomorrow, so i'm going to run away now.

p.s. dear robert, i miss you!
