haircut

robert's hair was getting a bit long so he started to cut his own hair in front of the bathroom sink. typical. the last time he did his own haircut turned out disastrous; he had to quickly drive up to his parents' house and get his mom to fix it.

the boy just never learns. i thought cutting-your-own-hair disasters only happened to people under the age of six.

this time, he cut the front bit of his hair (too short, in both of our opinions) and i did the rest. it looks good! i am quite pleased with my handiwork on robert's hair. :)

construction graffiti

walked to cinematheek to return a couple of DVDs today and passed by this construction site on paradijslaan. i like that construction companies employ graffiti artists to prettify the walls around the construction site.

movie zombie

yay! i finally got casshern on DVD! i'd wanted to see it ever since kiki mentioned it in his blog. the graphics and robots are amazing, love the fight sequence choreography, the setting really industrial and geiger-ish, reminding me of david lynch's 'dune'. the ending was a bit difficult to grasp, but overall, an enjoyable movie.

we also saw dodgeball, ahahaha! ben stiller is hilarious! robert had never played dodgeball as a kid, but i guess that's an american thing; we had to play it in gym class at school.

robert wanted to go see dear wendy last week but i'd already seen it at amsterdam's tuchinsky with john and andrea a few weeks ago when john was in town, so i guess we'll wait till it comes out on DVD.

next movies on the list for me:
- batman begins: christian bale as batman? yumm yumm, hehe... maybe i take robert out on a movie date this week.

- charlie and the chocolate factory: oooo, this is one of my all-time favorite books, and i'm so so looking forward... *ugh, masih lama lagi keluarnya, ga sabar deh*

- 2046: wong kar-wei's latest. we tried to get the dvd at cinematheek but they didn't have it yet. :(

- wallace and gromit and the curse of the were rabbit

- the chronicles of narnia: another childhood book favorite :) but will only be released christmas 2005, boo hoo :(

- tim burton's the corpse bride: god, i love tim burton's work *sigh* again, won't be released till later this year :(

sushi wushi lunch

today peter and i went to the japanese place (which was thankfully air-conditioned) down kleine berg for a sushi lunch. we shared some oshinko-, tekka-, sake-, kappa- maki and some tamago and sake nigiri. yumm! forgot to take pictures, so what else is new.

it reminded me of having sushi lunches with my father. not that peter reminded me of my dad or anything. i just miss being able to just have lunch with my dad sometimes. and when i ate with my dad, we end up in a japanese place most of the time, hence this flashback during lunch today.

whenever my dad came to visit me in london, he always wanted to go to this japanese place in soho, where he'd always order the sashimi bento or the toriteriyaki bento.

a few years ago, i was down in lisbon, visiting my parents. my dad had found this great little japanese place in alcantara but it was expensive and i was broke so i figured if i swung by his office, he'd take me out there. hehe. little miss sneaky pants i was.

so my dad and i had a delicious lunch, over which we drank sapporo (or kirin?) beers and and plum wine and sake. uh oh. just a bit too much. when lunch was over, we were both giddily tipsy, except we weren't going to admit that we were hammered.

dad: i don't think i'm going back to the office.
me: no? why not?
dad: because i'm going to go and play golf!
me: *thinking: shit, i can't go home and pass out now* oh ok, i'm going to the museum of fine art then!

so paulo dropped my dad off at home, and then dropped me off at the art museum. omg, what an afternoon. i was really drunk in the museum, i just waltzed through all the galleries, cross-eyed at everything. i couldn't remember anything i saw (so had to return the following week).

after a while, i had to sit outside to clear my head a bit. i got home, and my mom asked what we did for lunch that made my dad so tired. apparently my dad had gone straight to bed after the lunch drinking session. huahahaha.

anyway, remembering this story made me smile.

wriggle

wriggling in the heat. indonesians would say this as "seperti cacing kepanasan". literally, like worms in the heat. wriggling uncomfortably and drying out.

summer is here. at last.

day out with colleagues

yesterday was interactive day, which meant a day out with my colleagues from the interactive design department.

it started around lunchtime at marja and theo's farm, but robert and i turned up slightly late anyway. we'd been out late the night before, attending ian's goodbye drinky-doo as he and kate were returning to england for good on monday, and then we'd all continued to a late night dinner after the farewell drinks.

to add to our tardiness, robert and i got lost on the way to marja's farm, hehe, but it was so beautiful yesterday that it was just nice to drive around. marja and theo live in a beautiful cozy farmhouse with a lot of garden space around, a fish pond, greenhouse.

after drinks and snacks, we went off canoeing in the afternoon. you can see the program and route here. i was in a canoe with john, who transformed into a hyperactive child during the trip, and wanted to splash everyone on the other boats. it was really fun, i was soaked after all that splashing, but it was so so warm and sunny that we dried up in no time.

IADsaturday.jpg

we didn't paddle all the time, sometimes we just floated along with the river's current and enjoyed the view. at one time, a beautiful mahogany horse was running on the field parallel to the river, and as it came to the water's edge, two other horses came up behind it, probably its family, a pony, and a mare in the same mahogany hue. as our canoe went round the bend, the horse gave the pony a gentle nuzzle, a motherly kiss. awwww...

we stopped for beers and a short break at a riverside pub. most of the guys at this time had stripped off their shirts; robert said he was pleased because a lot of our colleagues were paler than him. hahaha, this must be a bule thing.

sometimes i'd get sneaky and latch the T-end of my paddle onto the rope in the back of other people's canoes, and john and i would just relax and giggle to ourselves.

after the canoe trip, we had to split into teams and walk back to marja's. we were given paper with sequential images that would lead us to marja's. we also had a sheet of paper with images of objects along our walk. the object images were scrambled so we had to put them in order as we walked and discovered them.

i was in a team with jessica, ramon and robert. we were tired and hungry and our wet underpants clung to our butt cracks and our wet sneakers went squish-squish-squish when we walked. :( but we managed to be the first team to get to marja's and we saw all of the objects except one. hooray! :)

dinner was BBQ at marja and theo's. they had an electric grill so the food was done very quickly; which was good because everyone was starving! yumm yumm, i had a hamburger, chicken sate, and sausage with salad and garlic bread, nacho chips with salsa and slices of watermelon for dessert. yummmm...

it was a really good day out and i'd definitely do it again. thanks so much to the colleagues who organised everything: wilco, sebnem, judith and jeroen. :)

p.s. john, do you have muscle pain from all that rowing? i have saddle pain from sitting on that hard plastic canoe bench for hours.

*photos by wilco and jessica, thank you*

jika...

buset. udah lama banget gue ngga dengar lagu ini. lagu 'jika'-nya melly goeslaw dan ari lasso. pertama kali gue dengar lagu ini kalo ngga salah gue lagi di indo, pas christmas vacation dari kuliah. gue suka banget sama lagu itu tapi ya biasa lah... gue ngga follow up. lalu gue balik ke london tanpa sempet beli cd tersebut.

tadi gara-gara mpok early pasang playlist baru di multiply, yg salah satu lagunya termasuk 'jika', gue jadi inget lagi betapa sukanya gue dengan lagu ini. jadi dari tadi gue repeat melulu.

Jika - Melly Goeslaw & Ari Lasso

Jika teringat tentang dikau
Jauh di mata dekat di hati
Sempat terpikir tuk kembali
Walau beda akan kujalani
Tak ada niat untuk selamanya pergi

Jika teringat tentang dikau

Maafkan daku ingin kembali
Seumpama ada jalan tuk kembali

Jika teringat tentang dikau
Jauh di mata dekat di hati
Tak ada niat untuk selamanya pergi

Jika teringat tentang dikau
Jauh di mata dekat di hati
Tak ada niat untuk berpisah denganmu

speech accent archive

haha... i found this site a couple years ago and i always enjoyed listening to other people's accents. last month i was talking to panji and we decided to record our voices and send them to each other.

the text we had to read was this:
please call stella. ask her to bring these things with her from the store: six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother bob. we also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog for the kids. she can scoop these things into three red bags, and we will go meet her wednesday at the train station.

little background on panji: panji is indonesian and he has lived in indonesia, US, singapore and currently living in australia. fluent in bahasa indonesia and english.

bit of my lingual background: first language was french, second language was indonesian, third language was english at 10 years old. lived in genevé, washington d.c, london, and eindhoven. i don't really speak dutch very well, but i understand most of it *selective memory, hahaha*.

then today i was fooling around at work, showing people cool websites and i got etienne to record his voice on my phone. etienne is dutch, speaks both english and dutch fluently.

if you want to send me yours, i'll put it up here as well!

hello bananeira.net!

hello hello. i am in the process of moving to bananeira.net from bananeira.com.

this is due to some complicated situation with pixiehost.com. it's unfortunate that i've lost bananeira.com, but i'm making myself comfortable and settled at bananeira.net. i am currently being hosted by mediatemple.com.

in the next few days, i should be completing my move and getting stuff set up, so things will look messy until i get properly settled. check back later perhaps.

update guys, i'm still in the process of moving my data, so images and tags might be missing here and there... just let me know if you find anything weird. thx.

monica

look what i got in my office mailbox today! look! look!

mon_postcard.jpg

the story of the manneke pis postcard:

flashback to 2002. it was one of those nights after work where monica and i were running late. we had to pick up the car, and drive to brussels to pick up alexis who was arriving from london. we stopped by the sillems' home in achel for dinner with faisal, kohar, reinier and hassan, then a mad rush to brussels airport. we sang along to a finley quaye cd. the traffic mannequins on the belgian highway freaked us out *believe me, if you've driven in the dark on a belgian highway and seen one, you'd know what we mean*

we got to the airport and alexis' plane hadn't even arrived yet.

so we waited and we spotted this photo booth that made postcards. 2 euros and a few poses later... tadaaa! a postcard from yours truly... i love how mon sent this token of that night... i miss you mon!

the month of june

a friend a day... let's hope i have enough time to write an entry about one friend each day in the month of june... i've met and befriended so many interesting individuals in my lifetime, that i'm not sure i can fit everyone into this month...

hehe. maybe those friends i've lost touch with would google their names and come up with this site and bring us back together. here goes.

domesticated

so i turned 27 and robert gives me a blender, which is what i've been thinking of buying anyway. so i have been making fresh gazpacho and pasta sauces with it, and yummy smoothies and fresh fruit yoghurt shakes for breakfast.

robert is turning 29 next week and he wants me to get him a beard trimmer.

excuse me... aren't we being too domesticated here? 0_o
