design party eindhoven
tuesday night, after a really delicious italian dinner at de avonden, laszlo, monica, denise, joão and i went to a design party. it was held at the klokgebouw, which celebrated the end of the eindhoven design week, an annual design event here in eindhoven.
it was a pretty good party. i liked the venue. the music was loud and enjoyable, oh but the last DJ was a bit too techno for me. but yeah, overall, it was a nice midweek distraction. same old design crowd, i guess, lots of familiar faces. lots of people from work, and from the design academy.
you can see some of my pictures of that evening here. i have also put up photos of the party's cool lighting on my buzznet photolog.

1. laszlo: ooooo, let's call houston
2. monica (waving frantically at mothership): helloooooo, mothership houston
3. laszlo: please can we return to the planet where we came from???

monica's farm
*specially dedicated to monica and her collection of little crochet animals*
to the tune of old mcdonald's
miss bueno had a farm, ee-ay ee-ay oh
and on that farm she had a trippy elephant, ee-ay ee-ay-oh
with a trip-trip here
and a trip-trip there
here a trip, there a trip
everywhere trippy elephants
miss bueno had a farm
ee-ay ee-ay oh
all together now!
miss bueno had a farm, ee-ay, ee-ay oh
and on that farm she had a goose, ee-ay ee-ay oh
with a quack-quack here
and a quack-quack there
here a quack, there a quack
everywhere goose quacking
miss bueno had a farm
ee-ay ee-ay oh
this is the x-rated part
miss bueno had a farm, ee-ay, ee-ay oh
and on that farm she had made the animals have weekly orgies, ee-ay ee-ay oh
and sometimes she'd get her super8 out and make the director's cut, ee-ay ee-ay oh

things monica taught me
this weekend, amongst other things we did, monica taught me how to make coffee without a cafetiére...
dear dad, if you are reading this, i still have the cafetiéres you bought me (both the and the french press), don't worry, my cafetiéres are fine, we were doing this at monica's house where there was no cafetiére...
dear monica's dad, if you are reading this, i am wondering why monica gave you this url, and does that mean you are going to send her a new cafetiére?

1. secure cloth around beaker with a piece of twine
2. pour the required amount of ground coffee beans into cloth
3. pour hot water over the coffee

4. let the water drip down to the beaker
5. tadaa! all done!
6. enjoy your coffee (this is why i am still up at 1.30 am on a sunday morning)

the elckerlyclaan bunch
yay! patricia's here! i haven't seen her in years. after she left the netherlands, she went back to colombia to finish her degree, and worked there for a while, but now she is doing her master's in stockholm, so she decided to pop round for the weekend! yay!
tonight i am having iftar with monica, patricia and robert at juffrouw tok's because i am really desperate for some piri-piri chicken.
karen is also arriving tonight from germany. knowing her, she is probably catching the latest train from berlin and arrive here really really late, enough for one last drink at the pub before closing time.
tomorrow we are going to the design academy degree show, and maybe cooking together in the evening. sunday laszlo has invited us over for brunch (uh-oh, i'm fasting, bad timing) and a day out in rotterdam. joao is still here, we've been working together on a project and his girlfriend denise is joining us from rio; i think she's arrived this afternoon and is somewhere in amsterdam.
yay! this is just like before. summers in elckerlyclaan, going out swimming, cooking together, drinking in town, going dancing, making movies, going out for day trips, exhibits, etc. yasmina, laszlo, patricia, monica, karen, joao, together again. i'm happy. :)
have a good weekend everyone!
p.s. i wonder where giovanni and dario are?

santa and his reindeer
so i bought some smoked reindeer the other night. i have been eating them with melba toast as my morning sahur, or meal, before i start fasting for the day.
now robert is having a go at me because he reckons i won't get a visit from santa this year because i ate santa's transportation.
hummm. bah humbug. :(
anyway some shops are already selling sinterklas (dutch santa claus) goods and traditional chocolate letters. christmas comes earlier and earlier every year.

shopping for sheets
what is it with sheets not fitting the bed? it's a nightmare trying to find sheets to fit beds measuring 180x210cm, which is something incomprehensible to me, because most of the dutch (male) population stands at an average 190cm tall.
a well-fitting mattress should be approximately 20cm longer than your height, so either most people are sleeping on ill-fitting beds, or they are all members of a secret sheet society, where they gather in the middle of the night at secret locations (members' basements, probably), and purchase sheets that are made for mattresses longer than 210cm.
then i was looking here which is where i used to get my bedlinen, but then i realised that they only deliver to mainland UK only. boo hoo :(
well, better luck next time.

ramadhan cravings
this is not going well. i have been craving british food like mad, since ramadhan started. i didn't make it to jenny's home store, which sells british food, before they shut for the weekend, and i don't think they are open on mondays either.
this weekend i had to satisfy myself by looking for british food online, which is just as well, cos i am not sure how i can resist the temptation if they were on the kitchen shelves.
i especially crave ambrosia custard, creamed rice and creamed macaroni puddings, walker's shortbread, and some yorkshire pudding soaked in gravy with a bit of on the side. yummmm...
it also doesn't help that i hadn't received anything for my yayhooray food swap, where i had been secretly wishing that i would get someone in UK as my secret sender.
humm, maybe i need to nip back to england for a food run.

stranger in a strange land
sometimes i can tell indonesians from the rest of the nationalities i see on the street, simply because indonesians tend to stare at me for a bit longer than a regular person would.
*dan gue yakin bahwa pada saat itu tampang gue lagi ga aneh2 spt rambut ungu disasak, dan ada upil nongol di ujung idung*
when i'm in town, and i feel a pair of eyes watching up and my eyes flick up and sure enough, it's an indonesian man, woman, or often a group of indonesians doing their shopping or whatever. they look at me curiously, unspoken words hanging in the air. i smile, politely, usually and carry on my way.
i don't know if they look at me so longingly and curiously because they are searching for something we may have in common; a language, a hometown, a green passport full of stamps.
last year in milan, i was sitting in the grass of the castelo, enjoying the sun and waiting for robert to come with our ice creams. i was wearing my sunglasses so maybe the two guys next to me could not tell whether i was sleeping or not, and they <b>started talking about me, in front of me, in bahasa indonesia</b>.
cowok 1:</b> eh eh liat deh tuh cewek. indonesia bukan yah?
cowok 2:</b> iya kali, ngga tau ya. ngga jelas dari sini sih, pake kacamata item sih.
cowok 1:</b> jepang kali ya. ada unsur jepangnya tuh cewek.
cowok 2: yeee, tanya aja dong.
cowok 1: kok gue? elo dong yang tanya!
***english translation***
guy number 1: see that girl there? do you think she's indonesian?
guy number 2: hummm. maybe. i can't tell, her sunglasses are in the way.
guy number 1: she could be japanese. she looks japanese from here.
guy number 2: why don't you ask?
guy number 1: why don't you ask?
***
how silly. it crossed my mind briefly to roll over lazily and tell the two guys that yes, i am indeed japanese, but i can speak indonesian, so please if they want to ask me something, just ask or otherwise shut it.
then robert came over with ice cream and the two guys started a conversation about him! eeek, i quickly dragged robert off to another part of the park where we could eat our ice cream peacefully.

out of town visitors
yay! joão's here! we picked him up at airport on sunday afternoon. he'll be here for a month or so, and from next week onwards, we will working together on a medical project, which should be fun! yay!
the question now is: where is laszlo? running around the brazilian amazon in a hazy cloud of love? ;)
***
yay! gaya and joachim brought me fresh supply of hanuta. they stayed here for one evening en route to london from frankfurt. it is really good to catch up with them.
gaya is my "food" buddy. we are always having conversations while we are engaged in a cooking activity. or else we talk about food. or new places to eat. or shopping for food. we just live to eat and cook.
***
suffering from cold and sore throat. however, the OSG for the 2005 mobile phone is not going to write itself, so am at work, with scarf wound round my neck, constantly drinking tea, eating mandarins, chewing strepsils, and armed with a box of tissues.
oh well. one more day to go. have a good weekend everyone!

second
split second. second best. i don't know if i ever met anyone who would put me first in their life. maybe my parents did put me first in their life for a while, before my sister was born. i don't know. for once, i want to be first in someone's life, not second, and i want to mean something.
maybe i should get a pet?
