my dad at undiscovered territory
this photo was taken by mas djaka dwiandi of my dad during the undiscovered territory event over the weekend in jakarta.
i'm pleasantly surprised that my dad came along and had a look round and a chat with mas godot. at least now he realises that my friends are actual living, breathing entities that have daytime jobs, hobbies, even families and kids. yes dad, i got over my imaginary friends at the age of six.

depth
the depth of my father's gray gaze. my heartstrings goes TWING! i think when i started dating sheldon, part of the initial attraction was his depth of thinking. and then, i realised he was so deep, he was lost in the vastness of his mind. and anyway, what's wrong with being shallow? sometimes that's what i am and i like myself even when i am shallow.

dim sum lunch with fu ho
lunched with fuho today. dimsum on left is singapore-style fried turnip cakes and on the right is taro cakes -- yummy! i love going to lunch with fu, because when loads of other people come, they always end up ordering huge meals instead of nice little dimsum dishes.

mr k and his computers
*sulking mode ON*
i am beginning to think that robert loves his computer more than he loves me. he sure spends more time tinkering on his computer than he does tinkering with me. ;) *what kind of tinkering, yah?*
the thing is that i don't mind him doing work on the computer; it's what he likes so i don't want to take him away from doing stuff he likes. i just mind that he doesn't have enough time to spend with me and time to work on his computer. it's got to be one or the other, and not both, and right now it seems like the score stands home network's 5 to yasmina's 0.

sour
i don't want to be sour. i want to stay sweet and sometimes spicy. when work is not going well and i feel like i'm stuck in a rut, and i imagine myself in this position for the next 10 years, i sometimes feel like i will be bitter and sour eventually. this thought scares me to no end, and i just want to bolt, pack everything up and leave.
because if you are a lemon, it's ok to be sour. when you're a person, it's not.

after
after. afternoon. after school. after dinner mints. aftershave. after. aprés ski. if i look at the order of grandchildren births in the haryono family, i came after sanny, santo, ine and tjippie. but maybe we all met each other in the waiting room, where all the kids who were going to be born are waiting, and we all said, 'hey, let's all be in the same family.' does my 'jiwa' come from the same place as my cousins' 'jiwas' did?

half
i once dated a guy whose father was caucasian and whose mother was chinese, which he said made him half english, half chinese. oh, i said, and examined him up and down. which half is english and which half is chinese?
sometimes, in the height of my identity crisis, i would feel as if i was half indonesian, half english, half european and half my own melting pot of culture. which adds up to two whole beings. wow!

when i got to work today (tuesday morning, may 18th that is), someone had put up birthday decorations over my desk, so the celebration continues. hugs, kisses and best wishes all around. apparently 26 sounds scarily young for some of my colleagues.

yesterday ...
... started with a picture SMS from my sister, wishing me a happy day.
in the evening, i get a nice birthday kiss (one of many) from boyfriend and he bakes one of his special hand-rolled pizzas and we had dinner together on the terrace, joined by robico. *makan diluar karena cuaca di belanda lagi maha indah*
and then it was time for a slice of yummy chocolate cake. hooray. here's hoping that my 26th year will be as sweet as the chocolate cake. ;)

shopping in maastricht
after a stressful drive through the center of maastricht trying to find parking space, robert; and i managed to spend a few hours of saturday afternoon doing a bit of shopping.
maastricht is so much better than eindhoven for shopping in terms of independent shops. i dragged robert along because he always complains about me traipsing around in jeans and sneakers, and i wanted his input as to what i should be wearing. he's pretty good at picking clothes for me to wear, i'm pretty open to new ideas, unless those new ideas are frilly and lacy and see-through and have heels higher than 7 cm. eek!
robert ended up getting me a pink sweater. it's cotton so i can wear it all year long. so much for living in a four-season country, it seems like all the seasons melt into one another without clear distinction. i think the collar, sleeve and body stitching are really well-made.
next we got me a pair of white linen trousers. i like that the trousers were lat-front and had a nice crisp crease. the trousers being white freak me out a bit; knowing my luck, the first thing i would do after putting them on is probably accidentally spill coffee or milk or juice on them. i should be careful with them.
anyway, tomorrow night i want to take robert out for dinner. haven't made reservations anywhere yet. but i was thinking about in den bergsche tuin or la biba.
*shit, i just read the link and they're closed mondays. poooohhhhhh!

eikelstraat
if you speak dutch, you'd understand that the word "eikel" means d*ckhead. and d*ckhead street was where robert and i found ourselves walking on today during our afternoon in maastricht.

i measure 158 cm in height. robert measures 196 cm in height. see what a difference that is? even our friends used to laugh at us in the street, whilst looking at our dimensions.

happiness is ...
... paying my financial debt to my dad. i owed him some money from a couple years ago, and now i've managed to pay him back the €3300. so am happy. i could have paid it back earlier, but i was naughty and along the way i was buying myself toys like, a powerbook and a canon G5 and a mountainbike. i am sure glad my dad doesn't charge interest on his loans. phew!
... compiling a wish list in amazon, mostly comprising of DVDs and books. the book i really want is by lian hearn and it is called 'Brilliance of the Moon'. it is part three of the otori trilogy, a fictional-historical saga of clans and warlords in middle age japan. i have the first 2 books, and i found the 1st book completely by accident last summer.
robert and i were going to italy and i thought i'd better stock up on books for the holidays, and i had a couple of 'boekenbon' given to me as gifts from robert's parents. the cover of the book was appealing so i bought it and a few others. i didn't know that it was a trilogy, so was a bit pissed off when i discovered that. it was a good read though, really rich descriptions and poetic.
anyhoo ...
i was also looking in the powershot G5website for accessories. i was specifically looking at these three products:
- Conversion Lens Adapter, which i need to be able to put lenses on my camera
- the wide angle lens Tele Converter TC-DC58N<
- the 58mm Close-Up Lens 250D which would be great for taking macro photos and making lots of interesting abstract texture images.
the prices on the site are a bit pricey tho and if i google it, i'm sure i can find better deals elsewhere. it's just i haven't used my camera as often as i thought i would have, so i was thinking if i got some accessories for it, i'd be forced to go out and take photos. or is that not very clever psychology?

trade
i traded my book for friendship. i was the new kid; i just wanted her to like me and be my friend.
i traded my chocolate bar for a glance, and maybe a conversation. he was cute and loved chocolate, so i thought if i let him have my chocolate bar from my lunchbox he'd talk to me more, and maybe sit to me in the cafetaria.
i tried to trade candy, chocolate and dolls for ownership of my sister's toes. she has lovely toes and as a kid i would try to buy them off her. she very nearly gave in. she was probably thinking of a life where she'd have to follow me around all the time; early on, we'd established the toes would always be attached to her, we were never going to detach them if you were thinking that we were a bit sick.

expanding site
took a while but i got my head into MT. now i got it working with this layout, although maybe some spots are less than perfect. hope to have the hiccups fixed soon-ish.
i expanded the site to several sub-domains:
- http://visual.bananeira.com is where i am putting a visual blog. i will try to upload an image a day, either photograph of something during the day or a quick sketch. daily visual exercise.
- http://oneword.bananeira.com is where i am putting a one-word blog. the idea is to exercise my writing and thinking; based on one trigger word, what can i write? i hope this will inspire some visual work as well.
- http://portfolio.bananeira.com is where i hope to put up my portfolio of work. but nothing there yet. i need to learn more about MT and its tags before trying to build my portfolio in MT.
- robico's banana tree. robico is the new resident monkey in my apartment! he came from seattle from bella's, and grabbed a lift to the netherlands on monica's luggage.
yeah, that's about it. sounds like a lot of work to maintain. eak! i hope not anyway.
